Julie's Gems: 6 Peninsula Hiking and Mountain Biking Trails

Trek through these spectacular Bay Area natural areas this weekend

It is no secret that the San Francisco Bay Area is teeming with stunning natural areas just beckoning exploration. Nature enthusiasts have their share of options for hiking and mountain biking. Here are some of the best Peninsula hiking spots to check out next time you’re looking to gain some inner peace and get in touch with nature.

Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve

Visiting Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve makes you feel as if you’ve been transported to a natural world of wonder. This expansive 5,412-acre open space preserve is located on the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking Half Moon Bay. Purisima Creek Canyon is the premier spot where you’ll walk among soaring redwoods, a rushing creek, and an understory of ferns, berries, and wildflowers.

Coastal redwoods are the tallest trees globally, making this a can’t-miss hike and photo opportunity. Head to the preserve’s north end to glimpse panoramic views of the coast and Half Moon Bay. You’re welcome to hike all of the trails while cyclists and equestrians are allowed on designated trails.

Skeggs Point

Skeggs Point is one of the top candidates for the “best mountain biking location” in the Bay, so stop by the next time you’re in the mood for a mountain biking adventure. The park offers several suitable trails for cyclists of varying skill levels. The terrain is hilly and rugged, so be prepared for a challenging ride under forest cover. The length of your trip can range from 13 to 30 miles, depending on the loops and trails you take. Whether you’re here to hike or mountain bike, you’re bound to have an exciting adventure.

Waterdog Lake

Named after a local salamander species, Waterdog Lake boasts a charming wooded area. The canyons are home to birds, raccoons, skunks, deer, and other majestic wildlife. Most who visit are joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists. The park features several trailheads of varying lengths and exciting features to explore along the way.

Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve

Every spring, the serpentine grasslands of Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve brim with beautiful wildflowers. The park’s location makes this stunning display accessible to residents from all over the San Francisco Peninsula. There are 467 acres of woodlands and grasslands to explore here, ensuring you never run out of sightseeing and hiking options.

Russian Ridge Preserve

Every season offers a different atmosphere and natural element to appreciate at Russian Ridge Preserve. Springtime brings colorful blooms, the hills are kissed with golden light during summer sunsets, fog blankets the preserve in autumn, and the hilltops are sometimes dusted with snow during winter.

When visiting Russian Ridge, one thing you can rely on is sighting diverse plant communities and a broad range of wildlife. From soaring raptors to patrolling coyotes, the steep forested canyons are filled with Mother Nature’s creatures. Tread carefully, bring a camera, and become one with your surroundings.

Pearson-Arastradero Preserve

Diverse in terrain, the Pearson-Arastradero Preserve features a lovely combination of rolling grassland and evergreen forest. Here you can spot deer, bobcats, coyotes, and various types of birds. Whether you seek a reflective walk through the grass, an exhilarating 10-mile hike or bike ride, or a snooze by the lake, you can do it all here. In addition, Arastradero Lake is a mere 20-minute hike from the parking lot and open year-round for fishing. This is a fantastic place to bring the kids to explore the preserve’s offerings and bring home the day's catch for dinner.
